HAGER Reality Check: SPD Surge Protection Devices

Our recent survey revealed that almost 30% of contractors are unsure about the new responsibilities around SPD Surge Protection Devices. The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations introduced several changes, including surge protection, which has caused some confusion within the electrical trade, particularly regarding solutions for residential and commercial installations.

Key Points for Contractors

Commercial Installations: Contractors must fit a surge protection device if overvoltage consequences result in:

  • Serious injury
  • Interruption of public services or damage to cultural heritage
  • Interruption of commercial or industrial activity
  • A large number of co-located individuals being affected

Risk Assessments: For installations outside these criteria, Regulation 443.5 requires a risk assessment to determine if protection against transient overvoltages is necessary.
